David Wilson
Born in Raleigh, NC, David earned his Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from South University in Columbia, SC, and is currently a PhD candidate in Psychology at Capella University. He honorably retired after serving nearly 3 decades in the U.S. Army, where he held roles as both an infantryman and HR manager.
David’s military service included key campaigns such as Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991, the Bosnia conflict in 1995, and assignments at various posts including Fort Moore, GA (formerly Fort Benning, GA), Fort Riley, KS, Camp Hovey, Korea, Ray Barracks in Friedberg, Germany, Fort Eisenhower, GA (formerly Fort Stewart, GA), and Fort Jackson/McCrady Training Center, SC.
The protagonist, Colonel Maximus “Max The Ruger” Strong VI, is an esteemed veteran turned U.S. President, who enforces a controversial executive order known as the Uncivil Obedience Act. He aims to deal with societal issues that lead to mass shootings and dismantle the myth that mental illness is the primary cause of this. The novel is interwoven with insights exposing a broader, more sinister reality behind these tragedies: The institutional failure of the political system to address gun violence.
Maximus, along with a group of whistleblowers and military veterans, launches Operation Carrier Pigeon, which is designed to force the government and citizens to confront the true causes of the epidemic. A combination of military strategy, social engineering, and psychological warfare aimed to push for strict regulation against weapons of war whilst navigating political corruption and societal resistance.
The novel begins before the enactment of the Uncivil Obedience Act, structured into three parts and the second part involves the implementation of the act. The third and final part unfolds the true impact of Maximus’s radical solution.
The novel’s theme of institutional failures, social neglect, and the unchecked power structures that perpetuate violence challenges readers to ponder over the narrative surrounding gun violence and whether real change can occur within the confines of a broken system.
Inspiration behind “Uncivil Obedience”
Drawing from his extensive training with the AR-15 semi/automatic weapon and his expertise in clinical mental health counseling, David recognized the detrimental impact of the misconception that mental illness is the primary cause of mass shootings. He believes that the stigma around mental illness is already severe enough without this additional misperception, and casting blame on mental health also exacerbates the challenges faced by individuals who are living with these conditions. David is a firm believer in putting an end to these harmful stereotypes.
David decided to take action, motivated by these insights. He engaged with authorities on this issue and decided to write a fictional novel that blends reality with a creative twist, offering a potential solution to mass shootings. His book aims to dispel the myths surrounding these tragedies, through his writing, he aims to challenge prevailing myths surrounding mass shootings and a fresh perspective on the several factors at play.
His book, titled Uncivil Obedience is not just a work of fiction; it is a call to action to contribute to the ongoing discourse about gun violence and mental health. It has woven together compelling narratives and thought-provoking themes in hopes to shed light on this issue.
In conclusion, David’s genuine commitment to mental health advocacy and his unique combination of military experience give his book a compelling voice ready to move his audience.
